About these works
The earliest dated picture is Church Interior, about 1888, from the years of his training in Paris and his travels in Europe, when architecture was already his subject. European Castle, catalogued as 1900 to 1920 in mixed media, and The Old Bridge, an oil on board, continue his interest in old buildings and places abroad.
The American subjects include Looking Up Broadway (New York City), a street view from his New York years; Main Street, Nantucket, about 1917, a large 40 by 50 inch canvas; and A Bountiful Crop, The Santa Barbara Mission, about 1917 to 1921, a figure with fruit in a California setting. The Necklace, the largest at 48 by 36 inches, shows two women in an interior, a reminder that Cooper also painted figures.
What this record tells an owner
These sales are not a price guide, and each Cooper is judged on its own subject, medium, size and condition. His Manhattan skyscraper views, Panama-Pacific Exposition scenes and watercolors are also central to his work, and only one New York picture appears here.
